Team Preview: Russia

Key Player: Igor Akinfeev
Coach: Stanislav Cherchesov

Russia come into this world cup as the host country with high expectations of having a successful tournament. These high expectations especially come from a very favorable draw in the groups that they have had. With an inconsistent Uruguay team and a Mohamed Salah injury riddled Egypt squad and a lackluster Saudi Arabia team hopes are high. Host countries have fared very well in past World Cups with only South Africa missing out on the knockout stage in the last 7 World Cups. A lot of pressure will be on keeper Igor Akinfeev who made pivotal mistake against Korea Republic in Brazil  when the ball slipped through his palms and into his own net giving Korea a 1-0 lead in a match Korea went on to win which proved vital in deciding the group. There is no doubt the Cska Moscow keeper has talent and he will be looking to make amends in front of his home supporters. Russia should feel confident going into the tournament especially at home and with a favorable draw but past they must put the mistakes of the past behind them in order to get through.
